Coach Update 4/3 + info about upcoming season (please read!!)
Hello, Winter Conditioning Swimmers and Families!
Please read on for information regarding the new upcoming season, as well as some important parent reminders.
Thank you, everyone, for a SPECTACULAR season! We had an awesome time trials today, with many best times and many swimmers racing for the first time ever!! Volunteers: Thank you. Greenmeadow runs on volunteers, and you made our time trials possible today. We’re one big team, and that includes all the people who work hard to make sure that our practices, our racing opportunities, and our whole season are special. A special thank you to: Donna Hill, Brian Lynch, Julie Spitzer, and Eric Spitzer for working especially hard to make both our time trials this past season so much fun! You guys are the best! Stay tuned for time trials results.
Week in Review:
This was a week full of preparation for our final time trials of the season! We had dive work, turn work, finish work, sprints, etc. Here are our quotes of the day for the past week!:
QOTD DAY 1: “Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.” — Aragorn, Lord of the Rings
QOTD DAY 2: “I never look back darling, it distracts from the now.”—Edna, The Incredibles
QOTD DAY 3: “When life gets you down do you wanna know what you’ve gotta do? Just keep swimming!” —Dory, Finding Nemo
Parent Reminders:
Remember that we do not have practice this upcoming week! Today (4/3) was the last day of this past season, and our new season will start on Monday, April 12th. Here are a few things to look for/remember as we transition into the new season:
- Lane assignments for the new season are forthcoming. Thank you for being patient as we race to fit as many people onto the team as we can.
- I want to outline a few of the things our coaches look for when putting together the groups:
- Please remember that lane assignments are being doled out first come, first serve in terms of registration order.
- Opting out of sharing a lane can only increase your chances of getting a spot on the team, not decrease them. If you opted out of sharing a lane and didn’t get a spot on the team, it is because our registration filled up before we could fit you in.
- If you didn’t opt out of sharing a lane, and still don’t get a spot, it could be because of a few things. The first: many 8U will not be doubled up as a water-safety precaution. Our coaches are only doubling up 8U lanes with swimmers who we are sure know all four strokes, can swim at least one whole lap of each, and with whose strokes we are already familiar. If you have an 8U swimmer who did not get a spot, it’s probably because (1) registration had already filled up before you registered your swimmer and (2) you opted out of sharing a lane, OR (1) registration had already filled up before you registered your swimmer and (2) in terms of swim skill level, your swimmer is not yet ready to double up in the lane (see qualifications in bold above).
- If your 8U swimmer does not get a spot, never fear! Another good alternative to swim team (especially if your swimmer is working up to learn all four strokes and become comfortable enough to swim a whole lap of each) are GMCA swim lessons! Contact Pool Manager Caleb Fenner, [email protected] for information about swim lessons. If at some point in the season, your swimmer is able to swim a whole lap of each stroke, contact Coach Tjasa Kmetec ([email protected]) for a try-out, and hopefully we will be able to add your swimmer to a lane (a shared lane)!
I understand this is very confusing (Believe me, it’s confusing and difficult to try to fit it all together into the lane assignments!!). But please remember that our coaches want to fit as many people on the team as possible; we are trying our best to accommodate everyone, and to be as fair as possible, but there will be some disappointment (I promise, it’s felt by us, too). Please, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
