Coach Update 2/21
Hello, Winter Conditioning Swimmers and Families!
Thanks for a great week everyone!
Week in Review:
All three groups had challenge kick sets, pull descend sets, some freestyle technique work, as well as some general underwater work. Here are our quotes of the day for the past week:
QOTD 1: Control the controllables
QOTD 2: I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion. -Mia Hamm
QOTD 3: Some people say I have attitude – maybe I do…but I think you have to. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does – that makes you a winner right there. ” -Venus William
Swimmers of the Week:
Name: Vivienne Schoell
Age: 6
Favorite Stroke: freestyle
Favorite thing about swimming: “Playing sneaky statues!”
Favorite vacation: Venice
Favorite food: pizza!
“In every area that we as coaches look for in a swimmer of the week-- good listening ears, positive attitude, growth mindset, encouragement of teammates, and, of course, hard work and dedication in the pool-- Vivienne has gone above and beyond. I notice sometimes that she can get discouraged when she gets tired or when we are trying something new and hard, but, in those moments, she manifests excitement for herself! She puts a smile on her face, and never forgets that, ultimately, she loves to swim. This is an important and valuable quality. All of us get discouraged sometimes, but to be patient and kind to yourself, to keep your spirits up so that you can then achieve the thing that was hard in the first place-- not many people can do that. Vivienne can. Great, great job, Vivienne! We are SO proud of you, and very happy we get to coach you!” -Coach Tjasa
Name: Rumi Ballagas
Age: 7 (almost 8!)
Favorite stroke: freestyle
Favorite thing about swimming: “The water. And seeing Rafa [big brother] and Freja complain!”
Favorite vacation: Lake Tahoe
Favorite food: “Pasta meatballs, and summer soup, and tacos.”
“I chose Rumi for swimmer of the week this week because of her hard work and great attitude she’s shown over the past few weeks of practices! She recently joined this 13 and up group because her older brother is in it. Despite this intimidating environment she continuously shows up to practice with a big smile, positive attitude, and ready to work hard. I’ve had so much fun coaching Rumi and getting to know her and I’m so excited to continue to watch her work hard and improve!!! Great work Rumi, you rock!!!!” -Coach Malia
